Candi Simping

Rabu, 01 Februari 2012
According to the Nagarakertagama, King Kertarajasa of Majapahit was immortalized through a portrait statue at Simping. This site has been identified with Candi Sumberjati, located to the south west of Blitar. Although in a ruined condition today, Candi Sumberjati displays some fine examples of detailed relief carving. The principal structure is thought to have been similar in type to the temples of Candi Kidal and Sawentar. One of the most important pieces of classical Javanese sculpture, possibly the portrait statue of Kertarajasa himself, was discovered at Candi Sumberjati. It has been suggested, for reasons of style, that the statue may in fact date from around A.D. 1360, when the temple was apparently renovated during the reign of King Hayam Wuruk. The life size stone image is now on display at the National Museum in Jakarta.
